Our Steel Operations
Since Steel Dynamics began producing hot roll steel coils in 1996, our steel operations platform has grown to include flat roll, structural, rail, engineered special bar, merchant bar, and specialty shapes. In addition, we offer highly engineered, high quality steel products that are custom-designed for specific customers and applications. SDI shipped 10.7 million tons of steel in 2020, and the company’s steel operations business platform accounted for 63% of its external sales.
Flat Roll Group
The Steel Dynamics Flat Roll Group produces sheet steel products consisting of hot roll, cold roll and coated steel products.The Flat Roll Group is comprised of three of SDI’s seven electric arc furnace steel mills – one at Butler, Indiana, one at Columbus, Mississippi and Sinton, Texas ― which have a combined annual production capacity of 6.4 million tons of hot roll steel sheet as well as eight downstream coating facilities.
Long Products Group
Our Structural and Rail Division is located in Columbia City, Indiana. It began operations as a Structural mill in 2002 and is one of SDI’sl argest steel operations. The Structural mill produces a variety of parallel flange sections such as wide flange beams, American Standard Beams, Manufactured Housing Beams, H Piling and Channel sections for the construction, transportation and industrial machinery markets.
